ECOLOGIAS CUIR
ARTS POSTGRADUATE RESEARCH PROGRAMME, Belém - Brasil, 7 May 2026 | Programa de Pós-Graduação em Artes da UFPA, Belém, 7 de maio de 2026
In May 2026, a workshop named 'Cuir Ecologies' was held at the Universidade Federal do Pará (Federal University of Pará), to which all the artists who are part of this project were invited to speak publicly about their artistic research. The workshop provided a platform to discuss the potential for a queer/cuir ecology to emerge from the Brazilian Amazon, and it also served as a starting point for creating a collective visual manifesto with all the attendees. Unsurprisingly, one of the workshop's main outcomes was the problematic use of 'queerness' (a foreign concept) as a framework for an ecological approach to genders and sexualities in the Amazon. This demonstrates a connection with the ongoing work of challenging queer studies scholarship and its inadequacy to address the challenges faced by LGBTQIAPN+ people in Latin America, particularly in the face of ongoing social and economic struggles in the region and in relation to the intersections with race and class. The use of 'Cuir', therefore, reflects a (always questioned and revisited) tradition of experimental and collective translation of 'queer', situating queerness in Latin America as a form of territorial reflection on gender and sexuality.
