Research Seminar Series
School of Modern Languages | Newcastle University
This presentation was part of the 'Research Seminar Series' of the School of Modern Languages (SML) | Newcastle University, through an invitation from Professor Sabrina Qiong Yu (SML Research Director). The principal investigator, Dr Danilo Baraúna, explored the main ideas, concepts, and preliminary results of the project 'From queer ecologies towards haunted aesthesis: disorientation, care and futurities in LGBTQIAPN+ artists' moving image from the Brazilian Amazon'. He presented some of the artists and artworks that are part of the project, focusing on the crucial role of curating as a methodology to foster creative communities. The seminar also included a special screening of the following experimental films: The Island of Shadows (2020), by Allyster Fagundes; Idyllic Enchantements (2022), by Rafael Matheus Moreira; and The Brega as Amazonian Empowerment (2019), by Nay Jinknss. Dr Giuliana Borea mediated the event.

A NOVA ERA | Brazilian Queer Cinema
Scottish Queer International Film Festival (SQIFF)
Curated in collaboration with Mostra Queer Brasil, this vibrant programme of short films offered a window into queer life and imagination across Brazil. From poetic documentary to sci-fi, magical realism to tender coming-of-age, the selection celebrates how fluidity, resistance, and revinvention shape queer identities and experiences in Brazilian contexts. These stories reflect a country where transformation is constant and identity is expansive. Whether through ancient landscapes, futuristic visions, or intimate connections, the films explore how queer Brazilians carve out space to live, feel, and dream on their own terms. The screening included the surprise screening of the short 'Americana', whinner of Best Brazilian Short Film from Mostra Luminosa in Bahia, and it was folloed by a conversation on Brazilian Queer cinema between filmaker and Mostra Queer Brasil founder Ricky Mastro and Amazônia EcoQueer curator Danilo Baraúna (Source: festival's programme booklet).

INDIGENOUS FILM, ART AND ACTIVISM:
counter-cartographies of the Amazon
University of Cambridge
Centre for Research in the Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities (CRASSH)
In this symposium, Dr Danilo Baraúna was invited by Dr Jamille Pinheiro Dias (University of London) and Professor Maite Conde (University of Cambridge) to present some of the main ideas and case studies of what would become, in 2025, the project Amazônia EcoQueer. Event description: 'This one-day symposium explores the relationship between film, art, and activism in the Amazon. Along with in-person discussions by international speakers, the programme includes a number of contemporary Amazonian films made by Indigenous creators who are using film to amplify their voices and contest historical marginalisation. Central to this event is a discussion of the concept of ‘territory.’ Recognizing the historical role of territorial mapmaking and cartography in colonial projects, the various speakers will explore the distinct ways in which indigenous filmmakers and artists offer alternative perspectives on the concept of territory, as well as practices of counter-mapping that intervene in and invert power relationships in the Amazon. Together the talks and screenings will explore the dynamic relationship between cinema, counter-cartographies, and diverse ontological perspectives in the Amazon region'.

CONFERENCE 2026
European Network for Cinema and Media Studies (NECS)
Université Paul-Valéry Montpellier (France)
This paper presented at the 19ª Conference of the European Network for Cinema and Media Studies, as part of the panel 'Ecologies and Surfaces of Connection in Artists' Films and Videos'. This panel was sponsored by the Cinema and Contemporary Visual Arts (CCVA) working group. This paper is a preliminary analysis of films by Keila-Sankofa, Nay Jinknss and Rafa Bqueer. It argues that their films draw on forgotten histories of local architecture, in relation to rivers, to develop a decolonial intimacy with Amazonian cities, aiming to challenge practices of territorial occupation.

ISPF | International Fellowships ECR Symposium
The British Academy
In this symposium, the preliminary results of the Amazônia EcoQueer project were presented during the work-in-progress sessions taking place over the two days. It was an opportunity to receive highly interdisciplinary feedback from Early Career Researchers based in the UK and internationally, creating research connections for future collaborations. According to the event organizers, the aim of the symposium was 'to provide a range of opportunities to get to know one another and one another’s work in order to aid you in working in ways you may well not often get the chance to do, and to provide a model through which we might support and encourage directly and indirectly future discussion and collaboration amongst yourselves well after the end of this symposium' (Source: event's booklet)

'IMAGES OF RESEARCH' | BA ECR Network Exhibition
5th Anniversary of the British Academy Early Career Researcher Network
Poster presented at the 5th Anniversary of the British Academy Early Career Researcher Network. The poster reads 'This project explores how LGBTQIAPN+ moving image artists from the Brazilian Amazon have imagined queer ecological futures for the region through films and videos that foreground local and decolonial knowledge. The image is a still from Caipora (2019), by Rafaela Correia, which is one of the project's case studies. In the film, the Amazonian spiritual being Caipora (represented by the figure in red at the centre of the image) is used to discuss the protection of the rainforest and gender-based violence in riverine communities.'

The British Academy National Postdoctoral Conference for ECRs 2025
'IMAGES OF RESEARCH' | BA ECRN Network Exhibition
The principal investigator of Amazônia EcoQueer, Dr Danilo Barauna, was invited to present a poster about the research during the British Academy National Postdoctoral Conference 2025. This poster features a short explanation about the project and a still image of the film The Island of Self-contemplation (2020), by Allyster Fagundes, featuring Rafael Matheus Moreira. According to the organizers, 'the event aimed to celebrate, unite, and empower postdoctoral researchers from across the UK, with a strong focus on SHAPE disciplines while actively engaging participants from STEM fields. It provides a vibrant platform to explore the postdoc journey, foster interdisciplinary and cross-sector collaborations, and identify shared challenges and opportunities for ECRs across these diverse disciplines. The event emphasised building synergies between SHAPE and STEM, highlighting opportunities for collaboration and guidance on navigating career pathways in both fields. Key topics included research culture, interdisciplinary partnerships, career development, leadership, publishing, careers beyond academia, equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI), and the evolving role of AI in research' (Source: https://www.thebritishacademy.ac.uk/events/national-postdoctoral-conference/ ).
