HAUNTED AFFECTS | DISORIENTED ECOLOGIES
Delve into the histories and images of this exhibition, exploring how LGBTQIAPN+ artists from the Brazilian Amazon have been imagining queer|cuir ecological modes of conviviality in this region amidst the current environmental crisis. The artworks on view explore discussions that range from the appropriation of colonial archives to subvert the representation of black and indigenous people in the history of Brazil, to the fostering of queer communities through friendship and eroticism. They centre the queer|cuir and trans body as an element that critically recovers a haunting colonial past, while looking to the present, to disorient our relationships with the environment, creating ecological interactions that place LGBTQIAPN+ lives and their intersections with race and class at the core of the work. By incorporating queerness into the Amazon, artists and the curator aim to contribute to a deeper understanding of this territory as a space of mobility, transformation, multiplicity, and diversity.
This exhibition was also integral to the seminars of the module 'Introduction to Latin America', taught to first-year undergraduate students of Portuguese, Spanish and Latin American Studies at Newcastle University.

AFETOS ASSOMBRADOS | ECOLOGIAS DESORIENTADAS
